Broussard stared at the screen and watched as the drone made lazy circles in the sky. The aircraft had finished spraying the area and he assumed it was making its way back to reload.
The Chief Petty Officer yawned and stretched, shifting in his seat. âIs all of science this slow and boring?â
Broussard nodded. âOnly the best of adrenaline junkies can handle our jobs.â He cracked a grin at his joke.
âI can tell.â The chiefâs eyes seemed vacant as he stared alongside the researcher. âTell me again what weâre looking for?â
Broussard shook his head. âAnything out of the ordinary.â
âWill this cure be pretty quick?â
Broussard shrugged. âIt is designed to be fast acting but it could be days to weeks before the infected see results.â
âDays to weeks?â The chief sat up and stared at him. âWhy are we watching then?â
Brossard slowly shook his head, his eyes glued to the monitors. âI just want to see something other than the steel walls of this ship.â
The chief nodded knowingly and came to his feet. He gently clapped the manâs shoulder. âYou watch all you want, Doc. I have things I should be doing.â
Broussard turned and gave him a sad smile. âIâm sorry if I gave you a false sense of hope.â
The chief shrugged. âNo sweat off my sack, Doc.â He stretched his neck and gave the man a crooked smile. âI guess I was hoping that cured people would just start walking out of buildings looking scared and confused.â
Broussard nodded. âHopefully one day.â
The chief excused himself and closed the door behind him. Broussard turned his attention back to the monitors and didnât turn around when the door opened again behind him.
âYou couldnât have woke me up for the party?â Carol slipped into the chair beside him, the wool blanket pulled snugly around her shoulders.
âYou should be in bed.â
âAnd you should have told me that they started the operation.â She sniffled and turned to the screens on the table. âWhat are we seeing here?â
âThis isâ¦â He paused and gave her a wide eyed stare. âIâm not even sure what city this is.â
She chuckled lightly and swayed to the side to bump him. âJust tell me what weâre looking at.â
âThey believe that a large population of infected live in these areas. They were saturated and we observed at least one subject get sprayed. I sincerely hope heâs taking it back to the population.â
âWhere are the good guys?â
Broussard tapped the other monitor. âBehind those barricades and chain link fences. I think it used to be a military base.â He sighed and gave her a sidelong glance. âNot many survived.â
She nodded solemnly. âAnything of note?â
He shook his head slowly. âI keep hoping to seeâ¦something.â
She leaned over and rested her head on his arm. âEventually.â
He nodded slowly. âThatâs what I told the chief.â He sighed again and leaned toward her, adding support. âHopefully soon.â
